The Department of Arts and Culture will embark on sub-sector consultations for white paper review process on Arts, Culture and Heritage Sector on Thursday and Friday, 07-08 April 2016 in Parktonian Hotel Bramfontein, Johannesburg.
Last year during October and November 2015, the Department of Arts and Culture had embarked on public consultations on the revision of the 1996 White Paper on Arts, Culture and Heritage Sector in all nine provinces and these consultations were followed by the National Indaba which was held from 26-27 November 2015. People made use of these platforms to raise critical issues that reflected how they see the state of the arts, culture and heritage sector. The report on the white paper sector Indaba is available on the DAC website.
The Department is aiming to continue on this review process with a specific focus on its public entities and provincial departments across all nine provinces. Tomorrow’s consultation will focus on the review of the Performing Arts: Music and Community Arts structures. Meanwhile Friday, 08 April consultation will focus on: Language, books and publishing.
The White Paper provides the key policy framework for the Department and the sector and has been used for the last 19 years. It has been a seminal document for the transformation and repositioning of the arts, culture and heritage sector broadly in the economic development in the democratic dispensation. The policy has also contributed immensely in the promotion, protection and preservation of the sector including engendering social cohesion and nation building.
Attached is the Schedule for Subsector Consultations across all nine provinces.
