04 November 2015

Arts and Culture Minister Mr Mathi Mthethwa-fMinister  Nathi Mthethwa will give a keynote address at the DISCOP AFRICA Conference Gala Dinner  on  Thursday, 05 November 2015 at the Venue, Green Park – Sandton in Johannesburg.  At the Gala Dinner, the People’s Republic of China will also be acknowledged as “Guest country of honour” for this year’s edition of DISCOP Africa.

This 11th edition of DISCOP Africa brings together buyers, sellers and producers of films, finished television programmes, packaged television channels and adaptation rights, and focuses on Africa-centric pitching, developing, financing and co-production platforms.

Supported by the Department of Arts and Culture under its Mzansi Golden Economy strategy and the City of Johannesburg, the DISCOP Africa trade show also consists of a content market and co-production forum, a conference, workshops, film and television shows and exhibitions; and it runs from 04 to 06 November 2015 at the Sandton Convention Centre.

The gathering brings together producers in the film and television industry under one roof to network and discuss the opportunities and economic potential of the continent, including giving a platform to emerging creators seeking to turn their ideas into marketable content.

The Minister recently met with film industry stakeholders in the country to discuss opportunities and challenges in the sector and chart a way forward on what needs be done in order to create an enabling environment where film entrepreneurs can flourish.  The meeting was also part of the consultations underway on the revision of the 1996 White Paper on Arts, Culture and Heritage.

As part of the National Development Plan that acknowledges the importance of the contribution of cultural and creative industries to economic growth, the film and television sector has proved itself as one of the vibrant, growing industries that can compete in international markets.

The Department of Arts and Culture recognizes the important role played by the sector in promoting social cohesion and nation building, economic growth and job creation.  Members of the media are invited.
