Chief Bhambatha Statue Unveiling

Arts and Culture Minister Mr Mathi Mthethwa-fArts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa invites members of the media to the Unveiling of Chief Bhambatha Sculpture on Tuesday, 22 September 2015. The unveiling of the statue will take place at Greytown Town Hall in Greytown, KwaZulu Natal province. His Excellency President J.G Zuma is expected to deliver a keynote address at the unveiling.

The story of Chief Bhambatha is one of heroism. He is renowned for his leadership role in an armed rebellion in 1906 against the poll tax. He looms largely in our history as an inspiration to all who resisted segregation and apartheid.

September marks Heritage Month celebrations in South Africa and this year’s theme is, “Our indigenous knowledge, our heritage: Towards the identification, promotion and preservation of South African’s living heritage. The theme reminds and reconnects us with our rich collective heritage, our cultural knowledge, expressions and practises.

The Department of Arts and Culture as a custodian of South Africa’s cultural, artistic and heritage programme was tasked by Cabinet to transform the heritage landscape of the country to ensure that it truly represents our society.

Government encourages all residents in the Republic of South Africa, and those from the rest of the continent and the African Diaspora who reside in the country to participate in the Heritage Month activities.
