The Department of Arts and Culture in partnership with the Joburg Theatre invites members of the media to the 3rd African Women Writers Symposium under the theme, “Looking Back, Looking Forward: Heritage, Turmoil and Transformation: Asserting African Women in the World” at The Fringe, Joburg Theatre from 17 – 19 September 2015.
The objectives of the symposium include providing space for African women writers to engage in a dialogue about African women’s writing as well as to strengthen women’s role in the literary arts and economy. The African Women Writers Symposium serves as a strategic platform and network for conversations about the African continent as well as strengthening existing collaborations. It will also contribute to the attainment of the African Union’s vision 2063 which strives for an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena.
The African Women Writers Symposium features a diverse grouping of well-known and award winning writers, storytellers and poets from South Africa, the rest of the continent and its Diaspora including Aminatta Forna, Sapphire, Yvonne Adhiambo-Owuor, Linton Kwesi Johnson, John Murillo, Kadija Sessay, Molara Wood, Keorapetse Kgositsile, Nise Malange, Myesha Jenkins, amongst others.
The Symposium will feature workshops, panel discussions, poetry and music. The literary symposium will also host a special tribute to the life and work of the late Nobel Laureate Nadine Gordimer in the form of an in memoriam lecture titled Literature and Freedom.
