Hot on the heels of our recent indie spotlight national call for proposals, the South African State Theatre is now looking for proposals to fill its main programme line-up for 2015/16/17/18.
We are looking for topical and relevant work that will satisfy the sophisticated tastes of the modern South African audience whilst pushing enough boundaries to create the new modern South African theatre. Productions that herald a new era with their boldness, that remember our history in a cutting-edge sort of way as they celebrate how far we have come, but have form enough to be tomorrow’s classics. These are productions that South Africans must be proud of and feel ‘represented’ with, productions that must show the world what South Africa is all about. They must stimulate debate amongst ordinary South Africans and must speak to our pride even as they outline our challenges. We are looking for “Trending Theatre of South Africa today”, theatre that resonates with the citizens of today, examines our identity and celebrates our humanity. And the genres we are looking for are Drama, Dance, and Musical Theatre.
Successful productions will be given budgets ranging from R200 000 to R400 000, depending on the scale or need and will be staged at three of our six stages – namely Opera, Drama, and Arena. Added to the production fee the South African State Theatre will also offer Marketing, Advertisement and Publicity assistance to the successful productions.
Individual producers and arts companies are invited to submit the following information for consideration:
1. Full script and a brief synopsis of the production
2. A minimum 3-page motivation of how the production is relevant, entertaining, cutting edge, inspiring, etc.
3. Company/Creative team information e.g., biographies, and contact details
4. Four-page narrative treatment (if there is no script or if it will be a dance/work shopped production).
The submitted proposals will be assessed by the South African State Theatre Artistic Team and then by the Artistic Committee of Council for recommendation to State Theatre Council.
Proposals can be submitted to:
And must reach the South African State Theatre no later than 12 September 2015. Successful companies will be informed not later than 27 November 2015.
